The program is designed to meet the needs of three distinct groups: (1) students with a baccalaureate degree in Information Systems, (2) students with baccalaureate degree in another area, who have information systems skills and desire to develop a new career in Information Systems, and (3) students with a baccalaureate degree in another area, who lack information systems skills and desire to develop new career skills in Information Systems. Students may complete the degree in a traditional face-to-face course environment, in an online course format, or in a combination of either format.

The department has received numerous national recognitions. In 1989, 1996, and 2003 the department was named the outstanding four-year Computer Information Systems program in North America by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). Selected from more than 2000 schools, Tarleton State University is one of two universities to receive this award three times.
