Student Research Grants
Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who are engaged in research, scholarly, and creative activities are encouraged to apply for a Student Research Grant (SRG) of up to $1000. (See note below for collaborative projects involving multiple students.)
SRG funds can be used for purchasing research supplies and travel needed to conduct the project (but not for presenting results--STGs are available for that purpose). Projects in all disciplines will be considered for funded as long as the project meets the criteria for student research and creative activities.
Student research and creative activities are defined here as student engagement in original research, scholarly activity, and/or creative activity, mentored by a faculty member, with the goal of publication, presentation, performance, or exhibition of the results or products.
There are three key elements to this definition that should be emphasized: (1) originality, partially or totally, of the project, (2) the relationship between the student and faculty mentor, whose responsibility is to actively guide student scholars in the methods of their disciplines, and (3) the goal that the results will be shared with others such that a contribution is made to the discipline (by publication and/or presentation at a respected discipline-specific conference).
It is critical that your proposal is of high-quality and sufficient detail. Remember, your goal is to convince the reviewers that your project is a valuable contribution to your discipline and that it is doable. Expect to go through several rounds of revision with your faculty mentor before submitting your proposal.
Collaborative projects involving multiple students will be considered if each student has a clear and unique role to play, but will be limited to $1500 total (one student should serve as the principle investigator and the other students should be listed as co-investigators--all students must sign the application form). For collaborative proposals, it is critical that the specific role of each student in the overall project be clearly described in the proposal.
Currently, there is a limit of one award per student. Effective Fall 2013, the following funding limits will apply:
- Undergraduate students may request up to $1000 per project. An additional $500 may be requested in a subsequent semester for expansion of the same project if it can be demonstrated that the objective of the original proposal was met (by submission of a report and/or presentation given at a conference).
- Graduate students may request up to $2000 per project if it is a thesis project; otherwise, the undergraduate funding limits apply.
The student must complete and submit the application (not the faculty mentor).
- Student will complete and submit the SRG Application Form (Word 2007 required to complete form).
- Have your faculty mentor complete the Faculty Recommendation Form (Word 2007 required to complete form).
- Submit signed forms to Dr. Russell Pfau in Science room 213H or 203 or by campus mail at Box T-0100.
Deadlines for application are the 15th of each month. Grants will be awarded by the last day of each month.
Expectations and Requirements:
- Awardees will be expected to present their results at the annual Tarleton Student Research Symposium and are encouraged to present at other, off-campus venues. Student Travel Grants are available for these venues.
- Students must access their funds by working through their faculty mentor and departmental administrative assistant.
- Tarleton Policies and Procedures must be followed when spending SRG funds. Details will be provided upon notification of award.
- Original receipts/invoices are required for reimbursements.
- All equipment and unused supplies purchased with SRG funds remain the property of Tarleton State University.
- If the proposals involving the use of human subjects (including those using surveys, interviews, etc.) or vertebrate animals, prior approval from the IRB or IACUC, respectively, must be obtained. Proposals involving use of recombinant DNA, unless specifically exempted by NIH Guidelines, must be reviewed and approved by the IBC.
- Funds must be used by the end of the fiscal year (August 31).
