Role of the Faculty Mentor

Effective mentoring is the key to a successful and rewarding experience for both the student and the faculty mentor.  The role of the faculty mentor is to provide the student with guidance and support, and to act as a role model, to facilitate the development of the student's skills and ethical behavior. 

  • Assist the student in developing a project that is within the abilities of the student and is appropriate for the given timeframe.  We recommend that faculty engage students in original projects that have the potential for publication or presentation.  
  • Supervise the student during their project.
  • Schedule regular meetings with the student to ensure progress.
  • When possible, help to provide the student with social opportunities with you and other faculty, scholars, and students in the discipline.  These could include individual or group meetings where students discuss their progress, departmental seminars, socials, lunch meetings, journal clubs, etc.  
  • Encourage the student to present their efforts at the Tarleton Student Research Symposium, TAMUS Pathways Symposium, and professional conferences specific to the discipline.
