McIlhaney Street to close Thursday for utility project

City to briefly close Washington-McIlhaney intersection Monday

Friday, February 15, 2013

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The city of Stephenville plans to temporarily close the intersection at Washington and McIlhaney streets on Monday, Feb. 18, from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m. in order to complete an underground utility project near the Tarleton campus.

City officials said Washington Street would only be closed off at the immediate intersection of McIlhaney. The contractor, Brett Construction, and the city are working together to make sure the water line tie-in process goes smoothly, said Stephenville director of public works Nick Williams.

To deter unnecessary traffic, the contractor will place “Road Closed to Thru Traffic” signs along Washington Street at the Lillian and Ollie street intersections, as well as at the intersection of Tarleton and McIlhaney streets. Students, faculty and staff will still be able to access parking lots P-5 and P-9 during the intersection’s closure.

Thru-traffic along Washington will be re-routed to Alexander Road, along McNeill and to Lillian.

UPDATE ON MCILHANEY/TARLETON/WASHINGTON STREETS CONSTRUCTION – January 11, 2013

The contractor with the City of Stephenville, Brett Johnson Construction, has made some great progress on the utility construction updates on McIlhaney, Tarleton and Washington Streets adjacent to the Stephenville campus - even with the rain delays.

Here are the latest updates for all to consider as you travel along these streets:

Tarleton Parking lots-

  • P-3, P-5, P-9 will be open this morning (Jan 11) at 8am and will remain open.

Temporary Future Closings

  • Ollie and Tarleton Street water tie-in to take place Friday evening , January 11th  (subject to change).
  • Washington Street tie-in: The city of Stephenville will shut down Washington Street for one evening either this Monday or Tuesday (Jan 14 or 15) 3 to 4 hours or more.  The City of Stephenville is coordinating this effort and will be publicizing this according to the contractor.

The contractor stated that the houses across from the Tarleton Center would be tied in to the new line as the very last task.  He felt that he could do this work and still allow traffic to get by with caution.

McIlhaney Street to close Thursday for utility project

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The city of Stephenville will close a portion of McIlhaney Street on Thursday, Jan. 3, as part of a utility construction project that is expected to be complete before the return of students for the spring 2013 semester.

Motorists will be required to detour around the construction zone after the city barricades McIlhaney from the Washington Street intersection to Military Drive and Tarleton Street. During construction and replacement of the city’s water line, access to the heart of the Tarleton campus and lots P-3, P-4 and P-7 will be limited to Military Drive through the east rock gates, and lot P-9, adjacent to the Tarleton Alumni Association, will be inaccessible.

City officials notified Tarleton staff that a portion of Tarleton Street, between McIlhaney and Ollie streets, would also be closed to vehicular traffic as part of the utility project.

The contractor selected for the water line replacement project has said construction will be complete in time to reopen McIlhaney Street prior to students’ return for spring semester classes on Monday, Jan. 14.

The upcoming utility replacement project comes ahead of a planned McIlhaney Street rehabilitation project, which the city of Stephenville has announced will begin in May following spring commencement and students’ departure for the summer break.
