October 11, 2012 Charity Concert

Tarleton Wind Ensemble & Chamber Winds Performing for Charity

The Tarleton State University Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds will present its first concert of the year on October 11, 2012 at 7:30 pm in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium.  The concert will feature senior music education major Jeremy Bowen with Edvard Grieg’s, Piano Concerto in a minor, op. 16.  Angelo State University Director of Bands, Dr. Daniel McCloud, will serve as guest conductor for Peter Mennin’s masterwork, Canzona.  Other works on the concert include Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare (Strauss), Pavane Pour une Infante Defunt [Pavane for a Dead Princess] (Ravel), “Joy” from The Awakening (Curiale), The Seal Lullaby (Whitacre), and To Tame the Perilous Skies (Holsinger).

As part of Tarleton State University’s State Employees Charitable Campaign (Pass the Hat), this concert will serve as a charity event.  Director of Bands and Wind Ensemble conductor Dr. Anthony Pursell charged the ensemble members to identify one charity they wished to support.  “I met with the section leaders at the beginning of the semester and asked them to each choose two or three charities they had an interest in.  Then we asked the members of the ensemble to vote on one of the charities they wished to support.”  The members of the ensemble overwhelmingly selected the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.  The foundation “…keeps music alive for thousands of students by donating musical instruments to underserved schools and kids, to inspire creativity, expression and joy throughout music.”

General admission tickets are free to the entire public; however, donations to the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation will be accepted.  Donations can be made via cash or check (checks should be made payable to SECC [State Employees Charitable Campaign]).  If you are unable to attend the concert and wish to make a donation, please contact Dr. Pursell at (254) 968-9242 or pursell@tarleton.edu.  Donations can be made up to October 26, 2012.  100% of all donations made will be delivered to the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation on behalf of the Tarleton State University Bands.
