Wind Ensemble & Chamber Winds

Dr. Anthony Pursell, Conductor

The Chamber Winds and Wind Ensemble are the premier wind bands at Tarleton State.  Both ensembles are conducted by Dr. Anthony Pursell, Director of Bands.

Membership is selected by audition from among the finest wind and percussion players at the university. Both ensembles perform diverse repertoire of the highest caliber. The Wind Ensemble has a strong commitment to new music as well as to the finest standard band repertoire. This ensemble has a tradition of excellence and commissions new works for band and hosts outstanding composers, conductors, and soloists.  The Wind Ensemble has participated in consortiums with universities from around the country to commission new works by several composers including: Kevin Walczyk, David Avshalomov, and Michael Schelle.  The Wind Ensemble gave the world premier of Conflict and From a Whisper by Tarleton alum, Jordan Grelle (BA, '11).  In April 2014, the Wind Ensemble also gave the world premier of Charles Fernandez's Spirits Rising, The Texan Rider at New York City's Carnegie Hall.

During the Invitational Band Festival, the Wind Ensemble concludes the festival with the composer-in-residence conducting a concert of his/her own works.  Guest conductors have included: Col. John R. Bourgeois, Frank Ticheli, Samuel R. Hazo, David R. Holsinger, and Mark Camphouse (2015).

During the Fall Semesters, the Wind Ensemble meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00am-12:00pm and Chamber Winds on Thursday from 6-7:30pm.  In the Spring, the Wind Ensemble meets from 3-5pm with the Chamber Winds periodically meeting from 4-5pm on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.
