Graphic Designer-Associate Intern

The Department of Student Publications, a subset of the Division of Student Life, is currently seeking a Graphic Designer to create marketing materials for the division. The person in this position will work cross-departmentally to aid with marketing campaigns that may include design of banners, brochures, flyers, posters, logos, advertisements, social media graphics, and various other publications or graphics. Applicants should be junior- or senior-level students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

This position is part of the Intern 2 Learn student employment program and participates as a R.E.A.L. internship experience. Candidates for this internship must qualify for sufficient financial need as determined by Financial Aid.

Job duties (including but not limited to)
  • Developing marketing campaign ideas to promote Student Life programs and services;
  • Creating design projects that specifically meet the needs of the clients (Student Life departments and organizations);
  • Working with the Student Publications Graduate Assistants to promote events/activities for the department and the division;
  • Designing advertisements for JTAC News that meet the specifications of the advertiser;
  • Working with the Video Production Manager to develop graphics or images for use in videos;
  • Taking photos or coordinating photo shoots for use in Student Life publications;
  • Writing and editing copy for publications;
  • Maintaining and organizing all current projects in the department’s project management system;
  • Meeting deadlines as prescribed by the Director of Student Publications;
  • Working with the university’s Marketing and Communication Office to ensure that all university graphic and branding standards are met and adhered to;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Publications.
Skills

The desired candidate should possess strong project management skills, be self-motivated, require little to no supervision, be able to work in a collaborative environment and be able to maintain client relationships. The candidate should also be advanced in design software such as Adobe CS6 (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.).

  • 1-2 years of experience in a related position
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Exhibit good office etiquette
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Exhibit good interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate good customer service skills, both internal and external
  • Observe the confidentiality of data
  • Maintain a journal during work experience considering student learning outcomes
  • Annually, post a reflection addressing the REAL student learning outcomes on chalk and wire
  • Annually, post a resume on chalk and wire

Advertising Representative

The Department of Student Publications is seeking an Advertising Representative to maintain and increase advertising revenue for the department through its print and online mediums. The person in this position will aid the department in maintaining an advertising revenue of at least $18,000.

Job duties (including but not limited to)
  • Maintain existing advertising agreements with current clients for online and print publications;
  • Seek out and retain new advertising agreements for online and print publications;
  • Meet or exceed a monthly sales goal averaging about $1,000/month;
  • Maintain accurate and up to date files that include contact information, call logs, contracts, etc. on all clients;
  • Work with campus departments and help develop advertising campaigns to promote events/activities for online and print publications;
  • Develop and execute campaign to sell ads for the Grassburr yearbook;
  • Assist the Administrative Assistant with invoicing and billing;
  • Layout and design advertisements to meet the specifications of the client
  • Work with the Graduate Assistant to develop, plan and execute promotional events for JTAC News;
  • Assist the Office Manager with administrative duties such as answering phone, greeting visitors, making deposits, checking mail, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Skills

The desired candidate should have experience in marketing and/or sales, should be comfortable with sales goals/quotas, and should be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
