COURAGE OF A COWARD

Adam Smith

Many may mock me
Because I can't stand in front of a mirror
And face my own mortality alone.
I'm labeled one of those cowards
Afraid to face the world for what it really is,
Trusting Someone I can neither prove nor understand.

But what is this opposing courage?
Isn't it really nothing more than
A naïve belief in existentialism?
Because no matter whether fate or fancy guides us
Carpe diem means little in the language of eternity.

And so here stands my counterpart
Secure in these illusions,
Guarding them like so many pieces of fine china on display,

Clean and proper, full of nothing
