Mindy Walks on Solid Ground

Amanda Baulch

Mindy walks on solid ground,
Feeling the road
Beneath her feet.
Her head never hides
In the clouds
Her thoughts never stray
To some far off place.

She chooses to stay
Where reality dwells,
Next to her mother’s bedside.
There, amid the covetous
Glances of death,
She prays,
Her knees on solid ground.

At night she curls up
In Care Bear Sheets,
Remembering how big
They used to seem.
And still she prays,
Not for escape,
But that for everyone’s sake,
Her mother stay
On solid ground.

Someday, not long,
Her prayers will fail,
Mindy will fall
As her mother’s hand drops.
She’ll weep bitter tears,
But remain with us still.
And we’ll all say a prayer
As her mother returns
To solid ground.
