The Old Dog

Laura A. Civello

The old dog retreats to her bed. Her stiff, arthritic legs trying to get her where she wants to go. Her muzzle that was once a shiny black is now silver. She is very tired. She was never a people person. She loved her owners, but they loved her too much. Sometimes she just wanted to be alone. But not now.

Now her owner is sitting on the bedroom floor, doing her homework. The old dog is about to do something that she must do. She goes up to the girl and nuzzles her, something she hasn’t done since she was a pup. She just wants to let her owners love her as much as they want to before the day is done. Because she does not want to go alone.
