Regret

Josh Daniels

A knife in the gut
Slowly twisting toward perfect agony
An instant of stupidity
An istant of doomed remembrance
Relived in recurring dreams
Sorrow breaks the spirit
Unforgotten words eat the soul
And leave the shell of a weeping man
Dark demeanor
Starless night
No pale moon lights the path
The blind man stumbles
The light of day long forgotten
Clawing for something solid
Nothing stays
Undone he is
But not the regret
The regret remains
Like unending decay of the heart
Chances not taken
Risky though they were
Robbed the meaning that life once held
Even a coward may redeen his memory
With a hero's death
Fear steals even that last comfort
So, he wanders still
Not truly living
Not quite dead
