Ode to the Country

Bonnie Harding

Laying here,
Sitting in the back
Of my old pickup truck
Smirnoff resting
In its tenny shoe holder
Don’t keep it cold
But it don’t tip over neither
Only got three, got to be careful
Ode to the country life!
Can’t beat it
Put new wire
Around the screened porch
Damned if them bugs
Don’t find their way in anyhow
Got rattlers, skunks, and dillers, too
Two old dogs
Keep me informed
Of the varmits whereabouts
Birds sure sound pretty
Chirping their night song
The hummers have gone to bed
Their bottles about empty
Oops! So’s mine
Have another
Should be studying
Got a final tomorrow morning
8:00 in the morning!
My brain don’t wake up
Till long about 11:00
Guess I’ll fake my way through
Just got to write a paper
Surely I can do that
Got published 'bout two weeks ago
First time ever
Oh well.
Mowed the grass
Place looks better
Not quite so empty
No moon tonight
Too many clouds
Stormed the last two nights
Ode to the country life!
Not a soul around
To nosey into what you do
Real quiet, peaceful like
Soul can get lost in this surround
O'
Star light, Star bright
First star I see tonight
I wish I would, I wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight
I wish my baby would come home
Ode to the country life.
