Oh, to Be Young

Lelie M. Lowey

“But what is so headstrong as youth?  What so blind as inexperience?”

—Charlotte Bronte

Oh, to be Young . . .

            you don’t know

            what you don’t know

            therefore you know everything

            nothing is impossible

            all things are possible

            therefore your possibilities are limitless

            full of self-confidence

            belief in self-worth

            therefore you can accomplish anything

            oblivious to reality

            sheltered from hardships

            therefore unprepared for inevitable failures

            with the wisdom of age

and the experience of life lived

            therefore deriving the impossible balance

                        between knowledge and innocence
