Not a Rain Dance

Sarah Martin

 “Let’s go!” she cries,

dancing with golden leaves

and a wind that loves to

twirl her in many directions.

She jumps the pinecones

and calls to the squirrels

“Where are you going?”

as they scamper up the trees.

She summons the song

of the fleeing birds

and dares the sun

to continue to shine.

And the trees, oh the trees!

they dance to her melody

as she commands the Earth,

wind and sky to her symphony.

Finally, her dance is done

and she falls into blades

of grass and fallen sun

and waits . . . waits . . . waits . . .
