Take it from me…

Attending a college that has a smaller number of students has so many advantages. I’m Emily Kahler, a senior Communication Studies major, and I have loved every second of attending Tarleton. Why is it better to take the smaller campuses into consideration in your college search? I’ll tell you why!

I’m sure you have heard it before, “you’re not just a number here.” What does this mean exactly? It means that your professors know you. They don’t know you by an identification number, they don’t just cross you off the attendance sheets, or anything along those lines. Your professors get to know you as a person, a student, and as a mentee. Majority of my professors have learned my first and last name and will even stop to say “hi” to me if we run into each other on campus.

Besides just seeing a friendly face around, professors are also there to help their students throughout their college career. One of my favorite professors that I have gotten to know, I took one of her classes my Sophomore year. Her name is Dr. Winslow. She is one of the best professors I have ever had during my time here at Tarleton. Our class size was less than 30 students and we were able to have many discussion-based lessons in that class. However, Dr. Winslow’s teaching goes far beyond the classroom. I have visited her office numerous times since I have taken her class. She has helped me find internships, advised me to take the best classes that would suit me as a student, always makes me laugh, and has been there to offer life-advice when needed. These are the kind of professors that you will get at Tarleton. The beyond-the-classroom kind.

My pal Ivan and I are both Tarleton Transition Mentors and took some campaign photos when we were running for Mr. & Ms. TSU in Spring 2021.

The biggest class I have ever been in was roughly 150 students. That’s it. Typically, the classes I am in range from 25-40 students in the room. This takes learning to another level. A lot of professors conduct discussion-based lectures, instead of standing in front of a PowerPoint presentation all class, reading off of the slides. There is a lot of group work involved in these smaller classes, too. This allows students to make connections, friends, and learn in a different way. I have met some of my best friends in college because of doing group projects together.

Tarleton being a smaller campus truly has its advantages: friends, excelling in academics, and mentors. This can be your future, too. Apply to Tarleton to get the best college experience.
