Tarleton Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society Wins Top Honors at Annual Conference and Gains Insights from Bowfishing Expert Lonnie Hamil

By Gaven Sanders | Student Liaison for The Tarleton Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society

February was a busy time for the Tarleton Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society, but it was filled with wonderful experiences, achievements, and opportunities.

General Meeting with Lonnie Hamil

At the Society meeting on February 11, Lonnie Hamil, the owner of Hamil Bowfishing Expeditions, spoke about his experiences in starting and managing a private hunting guide business. He also spoke about the general ecology of common bowfishing species. Hamil brought his self-built bowfishing boat to allow students the opportunity to see what a proper bowfishing setup looks like. Members in attendance were able to learn what it takes to start a professional hunting guide service as well as the general processes of bowfishing. After the meeting, members were able to meet with Hamil and ask questions or advice.

Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society Conference

Fifteen members attended the 2025 Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society annual conference in Denton, TX. While there, Tarleton attendees met with career professionals and student chapter members from around the state, learned about current wildlife research and advancements, presented undergraduate and graduate research, and competed in the Plant ID, Quiz Bowl, and Photo competitions. Students also volunteered to help set up and take down the conference, assist with registration, and support special events.

The Tarleton Student Chapter was awarded the high honor of Student Chapter of The Year. Several student officers and graduate students also received various awards and honors.
