Tarleton State University’s Department of Animal Science has announced Dr. Rafael Martinez as a new faculty member. His dedication to equine reproduction and performance, cultivated through his academic journey, brings a wealth of passion and experience to the department.
Martinez earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sam Houston State University and completed his doctorate in animal science at Texas A&M University, where his focus centered on equine amino acid metabolism and maternal-fetal nutrient transfer.
During his time at TAMU, he garnered various teaching accolades, including the Outstanding Doctoral Student Award in the Department of Animal Science and the Association of Former Students’ Distinguished Graduate Student-Teaching Award. Additionally, his commitment to research was recognized with the Young Investigator Award from the American Quarter Horse Foundation.
Before joining Tarleton State, he served as an Assistant Professor of Animal Sciences at Sam Houston State. In that role, he instructed a variety of equine science courses for both undergraduate and graduate students, secured funding for research and classroom enrichment, and played a key role in a successful USDA grant acquisition for student recruitment. He also served as chair for four different graduate master’s theses, underscoring his dedication to academic mentorship.
Tarleton State’s exciting journey toward HSI status aligns seamlessly with his commitment to opportunity. His experience as a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) E. Kika De La Garza Fellow for Hispanic Serving Institutions fueled his passion for championing the professional development of all individuals, including those from underrepresented backgrounds in agriculture.
Internationally, Dr. Martinez has proudly represented the American Quarter Horse Association and the USDA, delivering educational lectures across multiple countries. These experiences have not only promoted equine industry values but have also inspired a broader role. Martinez says he aspires to serve as an ambassador for Tarleton State, transcending borders and fostering connections with equine professionals worldwide.
He is currently engaged in teaching undergraduate courses focused on equine breeding management, research and writing. Dr. Martinez is eager to contribute to the existing program alongside the talented faculty members at Tarleton State.
