Equine Class to Sell Yearlings in Oklahoma City

Written By Josie Fladager

The Equine Sales Preparation and Marketing class will travel to the Oklahoma Fair State Park in Oklahoma City to take three yearlings to the 43rd Triangle Fall Sale held Oct. 27-29.

Five students are learning all aspects of preparing the yearlings for the sale. Students are involved in every step of the preparation process and develop a better understanding of equine behavior through training. The class includes marketing on a variety of platforms, exercise programs, proper nutrition prior to a sale, and ground work on a lead line and in the round pen.

Bobbie Walton, class instructor and director of the Equine Center, said the class is designed with student learning and success in mind.

“It’s very hands-on,” Walton said. “It’s not me doing [the training] and then just having the students come and clean stalls. The students are involved in every part of it.”

The yearlings were bred, born, raised, and trained at the Equine Center. Students take party in every stage of development including equine reproduction, halter-breaking, and sales prep and management.

“My favorite part of all of it is watching the growth of the students and the education they get out of it,” Walton said.
