Thurber was a culturally diverse company coal mining town around the turn of the 20th century. People from all over the world came to work in the mines of this boomtown. Among those immigrants was a high percentage of Italians, many of whom made their own wine.

Barking Rocks Winery began producing wine in the fall of 2002 in Hood County. Tiberia is a descendant of Italian immigrants from Rome and Caramanico Terme.  His parents came to America through Ellis Island as children in the 1920s and settled in Ravena, NY, near the Catskill Mountains.  He went to college in nearby Vermont but an adventurous spirit guided him to Texas.   After attempting unsuccessfully to grow grapes in Somervell County, Tiberia made arrangements to source quality fruit from the high plains of Texas and the rest is history.  Making wine, friends and events happen is the mission at Barking Rocks, and it is well on its way, one grape at a time.
