What is it?

Math Boot Camp gives eligible developmental math students the chance to improve their placement while also working out their math muscles. For one week during Transition Week in August dedicated students will sharpen their skills on the math material they need for their fall semester courses. At the end of the week each student will take a placement test and could skip right past the math class they were planning to enroll in thus saving both time and money. Even if a student does not skip a class with their placement test score they will be more fully equipped to successfully complete the math course they have scheduled.

Do I qualify?

Math Boot Camp is a program for students who have placed into 6 hours of math for Fall 2019. These courses include Math 0305 or Math 0306 in addition to Math 1314 or Math 1342. A student that has placed into only 3 hours of College Level Mathematics (Math 1314, 1332, 1324, 1342) or higher cannot improve their placement through Math Boot Camp.

How will it work?

Students will meet from 12 noon to 2 pm (2 hours) Monday through Friday, August 19-23, 2019, with an instructor for class activities and active learning lessons designed to develop students mathematical abilities. Also, students will attend a 1- hour lab session from 6 pm to 7 pm Monday through Thursday. Students will then be assessed with the TSI Math exam on Friday, August 23rd, to determine whether their placement has changed to a higher course. If students score high enough to place into the next course, they will be given opportunity and assistance that day to change their schedules.

What materials do I need?

Students will need to have a calculator with graphing capabilities for the Math Boot Camp. The TI-83 or TI-84 is recommended. The Mathematics department will have some calculators available to rent for $10. There will be no textbook needed for Math Boot Camp.

What will it cost?

The Math Boot Camp will cost $275 which is around a third of the cost of a regular course. There are no books to buy. This cost also includes the charge for testing at the end of the week. $250 is refundable if the student withdraws on or before August 9th. There is a $25 non-refundable charge for processing included in the cost. Students will also need a graphing calculator. Students can rent a graphing calculator for $10.
