STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Award-winning mathematics professor, highly sought-after motivational speaker and magician Dr. Jim Kirby headlines Tarleton State University’s annual Dinner in the Stacks set Saturday, Sept. 15, on the Stephenville campus.
Hosted by the Friends of the Dick Smith Library, this year’s event begins with appetizers at 6:30 in the library’s foyer followed by dinner in the stacks at 7 and Kirby’s presentation.
Kirby taught at Tarleton from 1983-2016, earning the Phi Eta Sigma Award in 1986, the O.A. Grant Award in 2002 and the Jack and Louise Arthur Award in 2003. He was selected to present the university’s annual Last Lecture in 2015, sharing the power of positive thinking.
A magician for 50 years, Kirby’s performed the last 30 in Stephenville at civic clubs and at company and birthday parties.
Tickets for Dinner in the Stacks are available online at trltn.info/library-dinneror at the Dick Smith Library. Deadline to purchase tickets is noon Wednesday, Sept. 12. Cost for Friends of the Library is $20, while non-members pay $25. Tickets will not be available at the door.
Established in 1990, the Friends of the Dick Smith Library is a volunteer organization dedicated to the support of the university’s library. The organization funds the acquisition of educational amenities that lie outside the library budget; sponsors discussions, lectures, book talks and other scholarly activities; and helps with endowments, bequests and other gifts to the library.
