AUSTIN, Texas — A delegation of over 125 faculty, staff and students from Tarleton State University filled the statehouse in Austin with purple for the university’s Day at the Capitol today.

Members of the contingent met with legislators and their staffs to share and celebrate Tarleton State’s 125 years of storied access, opportunity and affordability. Five interns are representing the university in the 89th legislative session in Austin.
“It is always an honor to visit the Capitol to discuss the ways in which we can help meet the evolving needs of Texas,” said Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley. “From healthcare to education and agriculture to engineering, our talented Texans are filling the workforce in numerous key areas.”
The Tarleton State group started the morning with a welcome from state Senator Brian Birdwell (District 22) and state Rep. Shelby Slawson (District 59). Birdwell and Slawson then sponsored resolutions recognizing Tarleton’s contributions to the Lone Star State for the past 125 years. The resolutions were read from the Senate and House floors.
“Today’s resolution is a deserved recognition of the important work that Tarleton State is doing in Texas,” said Birdwell. “I would like to congratulate Tarleton’s faculty, staff and proud alumni for 125 Years of Excellence in Texas. With a rapid growth trajectory, the future is bright.”
That sentiment was echoed by Slawson. “Having Tarleton State Day at the Capitol on Purple Thursday was a fitting way to celebrate the university’s impact throughout Texas. Tarleton’s transformative efforts to address workforce demands in key areas like healthcare and education enhance the quality of life for all Texans.”
School spirit was on full display throughout the day, highlighted by the Tarleton State choir performing the 125th commemorative song “Stewards of the Fire,” among others, in the rotunda.
“We are grateful to our elected officials for the hospitality today,” said Dr. Hurley. “As the fastest-growing public university in the state, we are soaring because of our people. Our past 125 years have been remarkable, and we are thriving as we look ahead to a bright future.”
A founding member of The Texas A&M System, Tarleton State University is breaking records — in enrollment, research, scholarship, athletics, philanthropy and engagement — while transforming the lives of approximately 18,000 students in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan and online.
