STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State Veteran Services Coordinator Alexis Malveaux has been recognized with The Texas A&M System Veteran Support Excellence Award for her outstanding contributions as Outreach Campus Coordinator and Hazlewood Manager.
Malveaux received the award Wednesday.
“Life is a journey, and it truly doesn’t matter where you come from or what you started with. You can get anywhere as long as you set your mind to it,” she said.
The Veteran Support Excellence Award is presented each year to a full-time faculty or staff member at an institution of The Texas A&M System who directs the growth of student veterans, serves as an advocate for student veterans or veteran issues, and develops or supports programs that enhance veteran success.
“Alexis has reliably demonstrated exemplary dedication, innovation, and leadership in her role, making significant improvements to our Hazlewood processing procedures and expanding our operations to better serve our students,” said Director of Veteran Relations Stephanie Kittelson, who nominated Malveaux for the award.
The Hazlewood Act is a Texas state benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses and dependent children with up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at Texas public higher education institutions. Kittelson said Malveaux has enhanced Tarleton State’s Hazlewood processing efficiency by updating the application form and streamlining the submission process, resulting in smoother operations and improved access for Hazlewood students. She has also spearheaded efforts to transition Hazlewood processing to a digital platform.
“We are confident that this change will lead to greater efficiency, accessibility and information security for our students,” Kittelson said.
Tarleton State serves 583 veterans and 1,512 spouses and children of veterans across all its campuses and online.
“In addition to her accomplishments in Hazlewood management, Alexis has expanded our outreach efforts by voluntarily relocating to our Fort Worth campus to assist students directly,” Kittelson added. “Her willingness to go above and beyond to ensure that all students receive the support they need reflects her commitment to student veterans and military affiliated students.”
Malveaux previously served as a student worker in the Office of Veteran Services for three years before assuming her current role three years ago. While she herself was not in the military, her parents are both Navy retirees.
