It was the college rodeo season’s final stop, and Jake Barnes was on the outside looking in.
The Tarleton State University saddle bronc rider needed a stellar outing at the hometown Tarleton Stampede to qualify for his third appearance at the College National Finals Rodeo.
It’s just under 1,400 miles from Cross Junction, Va., to Stephenville, Texas, but that’s a trip Sarah Angelone was willing to make to be on the Tarleton State University rodeo team.
Maddy Deerman realized she was a pretty good roper around the sixth grade.
“It’s hard to do roping when you’re really young,” she said. “You need to be a little bigger. When I got to junior high, I was able to up my game a little, to take shots from farther away, to take stronger swings and reach out a little farther.”

So they have helped, numerous times, and they did it again with a $2 million gift to support underrepresented students at Tarleton State University.
