STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton distinguished alumnus and legendary coach Harley Redin recently celebrated his 99th birthday in his home in Plainview, the place he crafted his reputation building the Wayland Baptist University basketball program.

The same week, the 1939 Tarleton graduate was awarded the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., the latest in a long list of honors following a career as a pioneer in the sport.

The Bunn Award is the highest honor given to an individual outside of enshrinement into the Hall of Fame. The Award was presented Thursday in conjunction with the annual Hall of Fame enshrinement.

“I can’t think of a person more deserving than this,” Wayland Baptist University President Bobby Hall said in a release from the university. “It’s been a lifetime achievement indeed. No one has done it better than Harley, and we are extremely proud of this accomplishment.”

Redin, who graduated from North Texas State after leaving Tarleton, coached the Wayland men’s program from 1948-1957 before building a juggernaut with the women’s team from 1955-1973. During that time his Flying Queens claimed AAU national championships in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1961, 1970 and 1971, and compiled a 76-game win streak that stretched from 1955-1958.

His list of accomplishments include the 1992 Jostens-Berenson Service Award presented by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association for his lifetime of service to the sport and the 2000 Naismith Award for Outstanding Contribution to the game of women’s basketball.

He was a 2003 inductee in the inaugural class of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Tarleton honored Redin as a Distinguished Alumni in 2003.
