STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Investigative journalist Tim Shorrock is the featured speaker at Tarleton State University’s Fall Speaker Symposium, live on YouTube at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Shorrock wrote Spies for Hire: The Secret World of Intelligence Outsourcing. Raised in Japan and South Korea, he has covered the intersection of national security and capitalism since the late 1970s.
During the Vietnam War he was active in the peace and antiwar movement, and he writes and comments frequently about U.S. military policies in Asia and the Korean peninsula.
He published his first article for The Nation in 1983, on the repercussions of a North Korean attack on a South Korean government delegation to Burma. Subsequent investigative pieces have included groundbreaking exposés of the Carlyle Group, the Bush administration’s failed attempt to privatize Iraq, and the AFL-CIO’s intervention in Chile and other countries during the Cold War.
He was the first journalist to interview the four National Security Agency whistle-blowers who exposed corporate corruption at the NSA and its extensive program of domestic surveillance.
Shorrock has been a frequent guest on “Democracy Now!” and his stories have appeared in Salon, Mother Jones, The Progressive, The Daily Beast and The New York Times.
