STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University is gearing up for two full days of helping the community—Service Day on Thursday, March 22, and Round Up on Saturday.
Both days are part of an annual week of activities that supports Tarleton’s core value of service.
“We take great pride in giving back to Stephenville and our outreach communities,” said President F. Dominic Dottavio. “Students, faculty and staff join hearts and hands during Service Week to help make life better for our friends and neighbors.”
On Service Day, Texans turn what they learn in the classroom into opportunities to help. Everything from preparing free tax returns for qualified individuals to helping teachers at area schools. Last year, more than 3,600 students volunteered some 12,000 hours.
Service Day is part of efforts by Tarleton’s Center for Academic Outreach and Engagement (AOE) to build a culture of social responsibility by connecting academic programs with community needs. To help Tarleton faculty increase and launch service-learning courses, AOE has established the Engaged Scholars Academy. The academy helps faculty promote citizenship and community involvement.
In concert with Service Day, free document shredding will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 22 at the south end of Tarleton parking lot P34 on South Harbin Drive.
Students, faculty and staff roll up their sleeves for Tarleton’s 20th annual Round Up on Saturday, March 24, to help local residents with everything from cleaning windows to general lawn and garden work. A student-led, student-initiated project, Round Up takes part in partnership with the city of Stephenville.
About 1,500 volunteers will help with more than 150 Round Up projects in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco and Midlothian.
