STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Dr. Kristin Herrmann, assistant head of the Department of Biological Sciences at Tarleton State University, has accepted an appointment as an associate editor of Ecology, Epidemiology, and Behavior for the Journal of Parasitology.
Dr. Herrmann is an active member of the American Society of Parasitologists (ASP), which has more than 800 members worldwide in industry, government and academic positions. The organization aims to increase the understanding of parasites and the diseases they cause.
She has served on ASP committees in both appointed and elected positions and currently is president of a regional branch, the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists.
Her research program is student-focused, and she has supervised 21 undergraduate and six graduate students in her lab. Her research interest is in the evolutionary ecology of the parasite-host interaction.
“Research in this area allows students to learn field, wet lab and molecular techniques,” she explained. “I am particularly interested in exploring the local aquatic systems and involving undergraduate students in both field and laboratory research.”
Herrmann joined the Department of Biological Sciences in 2012. Anassociate professor, she has developed and taught a variety of courses on parasitology, behavioral ecology, invertebrate zoology and a master’s-level writing course. She mentors undergraduate and graduate students in research and has 12 peer-reviewed publications in parasitological and ecological journals as well as three others with student authors currently in the review process.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in biology from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a Ph.D. in ecological and evolutionary parasitology from the University of Otago in New Zealand.
As the publication for the American Society of Parasitologists, the Journal of Parasitology publishes peer-reviewed research conducted by parasitologists throughout North America and the world. Parasitology broadly covers research on parasites in the fields of ecology, epidemiology, behavior, genetics, systematics, immunology, biochemistry and host-parasite interactions.
