Tarleton State Physics Students Earn National Award

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — The Tarleton State University chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won the Outstanding Chapter Award from the SPS national office for effective student-led outreach in the 2022-23 academic year.

SPS chapters are evaluated on their interaction with the campus community, the professional physics community, the public and with SPS national programs. The Outstanding Chapter Award recognizes high levels of outreach as well as unique approaches to fulfilling the SPS mission to help students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community.

“I am very honored to serve as the advisor for such a diverse group of students who passionately share their love of learning and knowledge of physics with the next generation of learners,” Instructor of Physics Melissa Lewis said. “They have worked diligently to earn this recognition. Tarleton SPS members have visited local K-12 schools to present physics demonstrations, encouraging school children to explore, ask questions and engage in the demonstrations.”

This is the third time the chapter has been recognized for excellence as a top-tier student-led physical sciences organization. It was deemed a notable chapter for the 2020-21 school year. Members also received the Marsh White Award for a fall 2022 event hosting more than 100 middle schoolers at the Tarleton State observatory.

The Society of Physics Students is a professional association designed for students; membership is open to anyone interested in physics and related fields. SPS operates within the American Institute of Physics, an umbrella organization for professional physical science societies.

A founding member of The Texas A&M System, Tarleton State University is breaking records — in enrollment, research, scholarship, athletics, philanthropy and engagement — while transforming the lives of approximately 18,000 students in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan and online. For 125 years, Tarleton State has been committed to accessible higher education opportunities for all while helping students grow academically, socially and professionally through programs that emphasize real world learning and address regional, state and national needs.
