STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University’s Erath Engaged, a leading voice for county residents, will host “Black Health and Wealth,” a Zoom summit, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29. The event focuses on how income and debt can negatively affect health.
Four central topics will be explored — intergenerational wealth transfer and health outcomes, nutritional health and food justice, mental health, and financial literacy.
The opening session, to be presented by Dr. Jennifer T. Edwards, Professor of communication studies, will address generational wealth and how it impacts health access, preventive care and well-being in the Black community.
Dr. Subi Gandhi, Associate Professor of public health, follows with an exploration of the impact of food insecurity on nutritional health and the promotion of culturally informed diets.
Counseling Assistant Professor Dr. LaShondra Manning will highlight the importance of mental health awareness and access in Black communities. She also will discuss the stigma surrounding mental health in communities of color.
Dr. Juan Gallardo, Director of the Texan Smart Financial Center, will facilitate the final session on “Financial Literacy Basics for Building Wealth,” featuring aspects of budgeting, debt management, saving strategies and credit building.
The free event is encouraged for all students and educators as well as the surrounding community. Click here to register.
