Students Present Original Research

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University graduate students and faculty from the Department of Communication Studies presented papers and pedagogy posters at the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication Research Symposium Nov. 2-3 in Denver.
Devynn Case, a Tarleton graduate student, presented original research, “The Tribe Has Spoken OUT: Survivor, Transgender Issues and the Ubuntu Approach.” She also shared a pedagogy poster, “Conference Hack: How to Transform a Regular Presentation Day into a ‘Real’ Conference,” with Dr. Sarah Maben. Case’s projects began in a communication ethics course with Maben.
Logan Allen, also a graduate student in the communication studies program, presented his research project, “RateMyProfessors.com: Gender Differences in Student Descriptions of Professors’ Physical Attributes.” Allen’s research began as a project last semester in Dr. Christopher Gearhart’s research methods course.
Dr. Liza Benedict, assistant professor, was honored for her service as the 2017-18 president for the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication.
An affiliate of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the council promotes the recognition, welfare and progress of journalism and mass communication education in the southwest United States. Each year, it hosts an annual symposium to recognize significant research by students and faculty in journalism and mass communication programs.
