STEPHENVILLE, Texas —The Alpha Gamma Rho chapter at Tarleton State University and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life are again sponsoring their annual Angel Tree. Each year they reach out to children in low-income areas in Stephenville, Dublin, De Leon and Gorman.
“Alpha Gamma Rho greatly appreciates the opportunity to be a part of the Angel Tree,” said Shelby Brownson, the AGR member in charge of the event. “It helps us give back to a community that has so graciously welcomed us. Most of all we are thankful for the number of people who adopt an angel and donate.”
Around 150 angels are adopted each year, and Stephanie Chambers, assistant director of fraternity and sorority life, expects a higher number this holiday season.
“Many of our students are lucky to have what they need, and it’s an eye-opening experience to interact with children who are ecstatic to receive a jacket and a small toy,” Chambers said. “It puts things into perspective. It’s what this time of year is all about.”
Tarleton students, faculty and staff are invited to adopt angels and help ensure these children have a great Christmas. The tree will be placed in the Office Fraternity and Sorority Life in Centennial Hall by Nov. 16. Gifts are due there by noon Dec. 12.
Tables also will be set up inside the Barry B. Thompson Student Center throughout November and December.
For gifts, consider clothing, especially items kids need in colder months like jackets and shoes. The application has a section where children can indicate a low-priced toy they would like to have. Purchasing gaming consoles or high-priced items is discouraged.
