STEPHENVILLE, Texas — For the eighth consecutive year, Tarleton State University hosts members of the Texas State Guard (TXSG) who will conduct a training mission on and off the university campus the weekend of Jan. 18-20. The weekend will help prepare the TXSG’s response to natural disasters.
“The focus of our training at Tarleton this year is humanitarian assistance operations, confidence training, team building and small unit leader development,” said Col. Lloyd Lietz, chief of staff, Army Component Command. “This weekend’s training will better prepare our Guardsmen to assist state and local authorities in times of state emergencies such as a tornado or hurricane.”
“This event has grown exponentially since 2011,” said Lt. Col. Wendell Sadler, who also serves as professor of kinesiology at Tarleton. “The motto of ‘Texans Serving Texas’ is highlighted significantly for Tarleton VIII. The code name for this exercise is Operation Oscar P.”
In addition to using several Tarleton facilities, including the university’s Hunewell Ranch, the TXSG will conduct its training mission to hone skills in land navigation, rescue evacuation, field meal preparation, incident command and control, and bivouac operations. Dr. Shaukat Goderya, assistant professor of astronomy at Tarleton, will provide a skywatch star party at the university’s Hunewell Ranch observatory for the TXSG guests.
“We appreciate the continued partnership with the leadership and staff of Tarleton State University, which is once again playing an important role in our training,” Sadler said. “The citizens of Stephenville have always been hospitable to the military, and we appreciate their support.”
The mission of the Texas State Guard is to provide mission-ready military forces to assist state and local authorities in times of state emergencies; to conduct homeland security and community service activities under the umbrella of Defense Support to Civil Authorities; and to augment the Texas Army National Guard and Texas Air National Guard as required. All three branches are administered by the state Adjutant General, an appointee of the Governor of Texas, and fall under the command of the Governor.
The mission of the Texas Military Forces is to provide the governor and the resident with ready and trained forces in support of Texas citizens and state and federal civil/military authorities at home and abroad.
The Texas Military Forces are commanded by the adjutant general of Texas, the state’s senior military official appointed by the governor, and is comprised of the Texas Military Department (formerly the Adjutant General’s Department), the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, the Texas State Guard and the Domestic Operations Command.
