STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University’s Department of Fine Arts welcomes the Brock McGuire Band, an internationally acclaimed traditional Irish folk ensemble, for a public performance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, in the theater of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.
General admission is $5 or free for students, faculty and staff with a valid Tarleton ID. The Fine Arts Center Box Office will open one hour prior to the concert.
The Brock McGuire Band, named “Traditional Irish Band of the Decade” by the Irish American News, is fronted by two of Ireland’s most celebrated traditional musicians: button accordionist and melodeonist Paul Brock and fiddler Manus McGuire. The band also includes multi-instrumentalist Dave Curley (banjo, mandolin, bodhrán, vocals and dance) and acclaimed pianist, composer and arranger Denis Carey.
A beacon of passion and precision, integrity and diversity, Brock McGuire Band is steeped in the Irish musical tradition; yet, seamlessly incorporates elements from American old-time, bluegrass, French-Canadian, and other Celtic traditions to create something accessible, recognizable, beautiful and unique. This ability is exemplified in the band’s most recent album “Green Grass Blue Grass,” featuring 14-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs. American music critic Bill Margeson has hailed the collaboration a “masterpiece.”
Appearances by the Brock McGuire Band include the Grand Ole Opry, Irish Fest, Chicago Cultural Center and the North Texas Irish Festival, among others. The band returns to the Tarleton campus for the first time since a 2015 concert appearance.
