The Health Pre-Professions Scholars Program (HPPSP) is intended to help you, a student in the College of Science and Mathematics, successfully achieve your potential as you prepare to apply to health professions schools. Health professional schools evaluate students for admission based on a holistic review of your application. What this means is that in addition to looking at your academic record (grades), they also evaluate your application based on your involvement and experiences in extracurricular and co-curricular activities. These experiences can include shadowing health professionals, work experience, volunteering your time and talent to community programs, research, and involvement with student organizations. When you are reviewed by a holistic process, the professional schools are not so much looking to see if you have “checked all the experiential boxes” as they are looking to determine if you have grown and matured into a well-rounded, independently-thinking, service-oriented leader as a result of your experiences.
Opportunities the HPPSP will provide to help you develop into a well-rounded health professional school applicant include:
- Workshops to develop such skills such as journaling your experiences, how to shadow, interview skills, writing a strong personal statement, and developing as a leader.
- Mentoring programs with peers, faculty, and health professional alumni and friends.
- Service to your community
- Mock application and interview
- Local and summer research opportunities
Participation in the HPPSP is voluntary through the HPPSP Canvas Community and all communication about HPPSP activities will be disseminated through this community.
