Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader Job Opportunities
Recurring Need for SI Leaders
SI is intended for courses that are historically difficult, courses with a large student to teacher ratio, or courses with a high percentage of Ds, Fs, or Withdrawals. The following list represents courses in which we would like to have or maintain SI leader coverage:
- Economics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- Physics
NOTE: If you do not see the subject you are interested in being an SI leader for, apply anyway. We may be able to fit you into a program not listed if funding permits, or use you as a tutor.
Primary Activities
- Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned materials including text(s) and supplemental readings
- Conduct at least two 50-minute study sessions per week throughout the term using strategies learned through the SI leader-training workshop.
- Regularly meet with the SI supervisor to discuss:
- Observations of the SI sessions.
- Use of SI session handouts and activities.
- Planning of SI sessions and use of a wide variety of learning strategies.
- Difficulties encountered in sessions.
Secondary Activities
- Provide two hour test preparation sessions, prior to examinations.
- Provide supplemental materials for use during SI sessions.
- Maintain contact throughout the term with course professor or designated representative.
- Meet with other campus SI leaders and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings.
- Assist SI supervisor in training other SI leaders.
- Other duties as assigned by the SI supervisor.
Maintenance Activities
- Complete necessary personnel paperwork.
- Attend SI leader training workshop at the beginning of each term.
- Work with TLC staff to select appropriate times and scheduling of SI sessions.
- Make periodic announcements about the availability of the SI sessions to the students.
- Ensure that all surveys are distributed and assist with data analysis.
- Collect attendance data for every SI session, including student names, course title, date, and time of session.
- Administer end-of-term evaluation to SI class to get student input on effectiveness of the SI program.
- Assist the SI supervisor in the preparation of end-of-term reports and other reports as requested.
- Maintain a professional attitude.
- Model appropriate behaviors to staff, students, and others.
- Provide the SI supervisor with an up-to-date schedule of your SI sessions.
- Notify your SI supervisor in advance if you cannot conduct a SI session as scheduled.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate (above the classification level of freshman) or graduate student.
- A consistent cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required.
- A grade of A in the selected or similar course is required (on rare exceptions we will allow individuals with a B to SI leaders if recommended and other requirements have been met); prior enrollment with the professor who is to teach the selected course is preferred but not a requirement.
- Good interpersonal and communications skills are required.
