Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader Job Opportunities

Recurring Need for SI Leaders

SI is intended for courses that are historically difficult, courses with a large student to teacher ratio, or courses with a high percentage of Ds, Fs, or Withdrawals. The following list represents courses in which we would like to have or maintain SI leader coverage:

  • Economics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

NOTE: If you do not see the subject you are interested in being an SI leader for, apply anyway. We may be able to fit you into a program not listed if funding permits, or use you as a tutor. 

Primary Activities

  1. Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned materials including text(s) and supplemental readings
  2. Conduct at least two 50-minute study sessions per week throughout the term using strategies learned through the SI leader-training workshop.
  3. Regularly meet with the SI supervisor to discuss:
    1. Observations of the SI sessions.
    2. Use of SI session handouts and activities.
    3. Planning of SI sessions and use of a wide variety of learning strategies.
    4. Difficulties encountered in sessions.

Secondary Activities

  1. Provide two hour test preparation sessions, prior to examinations.
  2. Provide supplemental materials for use during SI sessions.
  3. Maintain contact throughout the term with course professor or designated representative.
  4. Meet with other campus SI leaders and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings.
  5. Assist SI supervisor in training other SI leaders.
  6. Other duties as assigned by the SI supervisor.

Maintenance Activities

  1. Complete necessary personnel paperwork.
  2. Attend SI leader training workshop at the beginning of each term.
  3. Work with TLC staff to select appropriate times and scheduling of SI sessions.
  1. Make periodic announcements about the availability of the SI sessions to the students.
  2. Ensure that all surveys are distributed and assist with data analysis.
  3. Collect attendance data for every SI session, including student names, course title, date, and time of session.
  4. Administer end-of-term evaluation to SI class to get student input on effectiveness of the SI program.
  5. Assist the SI supervisor in the preparation of end-of-term reports and other reports as requested.
  6. Maintain a professional attitude.
  7. Model appropriate behaviors to staff, students, and others.
  8. Provide the SI supervisor with an up-to-date schedule of your SI sessions.
  9. Notify your SI supervisor in advance if you cannot conduct a SI session as scheduled.

Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate (above the classification level of freshman) or graduate student.
  2. A consistent cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required.
  3. A grade of A in the selected or similar course is required (on rare exceptions we will allow individuals with a B to SI leaders if recommended and other requirements have been met); prior enrollment with the professor who is to teach the selected course is preferred but not a requirement.
  4. Good interpersonal and communications skills are required.
