Internship Opportunity – Del Rio, Texas
Location and description: 50 miles north of Del Rio. 4100 acre ranch with Black Angus Cattle, Boer and Spanish Goats, and Dorper Sheep livestock. The ranch includes a hunting operation with half of the ranch leased for the year and the other half for family and friends.
Key duties at the ranch include: Working livestock several times a year. Maintaining roads, fences, & water. Clearing some land to grow more grass. Maintaining working pens – welding if certified. Understanding the business plan of the ranch – financials and economics of ranching. Running some models on how to maximize the land value and livestock health. Brainstorming ideas on how to improve the ranch over time.
Additional: The owners is open to having more than one intern at a time and filling requirements for students in the spring, summer, and fall. There are living quarters on the property.
Internship Opportunity – East Foundation’s San Antonio Viejo Ranch, 45 minutes south of Hebbronville, Texas
The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute (CKWRI) Deer Research Program is hiring five (5) highly motivated individuals to join a team researching white-tailed deer fawn survival in southern Texas. Technicians will live on the East Foundation’s San Antonio Viejo Ranch, 45 minutes south of Hebbronville, Texas. The primary objective of this study is to understand how maternal females have adapted behaviorally to meet their requirements and maximize the probability of offspring survival in a harsh and dynamic environment.
Primary duties include capturing and collaring white-tailed deer fawns from GPS collared does equipped with vaginal implant transmitters (VITs). This requires daily monitoring of doe collars, fawn collars, and VITs using radio telemetry. Additionally, technicians will conduct mortality investigations, sample vegetation, and manage data.
Previous experience working with and handling large animals is preferred. Experience with radio telemetry is also preferred.
Technicians must be able to live in close quarters with a small crew, while keeping a professional and positive attitude. Technicians must be willing to work long and irregular hours to meet the demands of researching the fawn rearing season. Technicians must be willing to work independently and in groups. Technicians must be able to tolerate the biting insects, venomous snakes, and high temperatures of South Texas.
This position will continue for three (3) months, June 5th, 2023, to August 31st, 2023. Technicians are required to commit to working until August 31st, or until all VITs are expelled.
